Feedback for Music Video
What went well…
Editing worked well overall; transitions between shots were ‘slick’ and were not forced, this is due to similarly framed scenes being placed next to each other on the storyboard so that the difference between shots was barely noticeable. In addition to this, the synchronisation of the video and audio during lip-synching was achieved. The subtle use of the Ken Burns effect helped bring movement to shots which otherwise would have been still but was not overused. Variance in shot types was effective, these included: long lens establishing shots all the way to close ups. The mis-en-scene of the scenes worked well to project the heartache feeling of the song. The locations (job centre, under a bridge etc.) helped set this tone through their dull, gloomy colour palette during the songs’ introduction and also magnify its up-tempo chorus through the contrast of yellow from the sunflower at this time. Following on from this idea, the difference in production of the video during the verse and chorus was distinguishable which helped reinforce the message of the song. Good inter-media shot through the camcorder. The font used at the beginning of the video worked well to create the ‘aesthetic’ of the video.
Even better if…
Slightly off beat cuts between shots, some establishing shots were played for too long as a result of under-filming on the day. Next time I will film more than I have to in order to prevent playing shots for longer than needed and sometimes repeating the same style of shots. Red hat did not match the colour palette of the song; therefore the mis-en-scene could have been improved and in order to combat this, the red hat should have been replaced by a yellow hat. Occasionally shots were overused and repetitive however filming more should solve this issue. The lip synching could have been more spread out instead of purely being at the end of the video, this would have also helped the repetitive shots to be broken up from each other. Furthermore, there was not a clear storyline to the video which could have been implemented to emphasise the message of the song and its lyrics, a narrative could also have broken up the shots used to solve the problem of overuse and repetitiveness.
